Meeting with Thomas Betremieux

A former officer in the Merchant Navy and the French Navy for 9 years, then HR manager and CSR auditor, Thomas has now been drawing on his skills and experience for over 7 years to support individual and collective transformation (over 450 workshops conducted with NUMA). Thomas is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure Maritime (ENSM), HEC and Mines ParisTech, a certified professional coach, and is also trained in complex negotiation techniques. Through his experience, he has also acquired strong expertise in intercultural and crisis management.

Can you tell us more about your background?

I started out as an officer in the merchant navy, then spent a number of reserve periods in the French Navy, where I managed around 30 people. I was then HR manager at Louis Dreyfus, then deputy director of CSR. A skills assessment at Switch Collective revealed my interest in innovation and people, which led me towards business transformation. I trained in digital transformation at HEC and École des Mines, in coaching at Coaching Ways, and in facilitation and negotiation. I've been running training courses since 2016.

What are your areas of expertise?

My areas of expertise revolve around 3 axes: management/leadership, innovation and ecology. I draw on my various management experiences in the field and in the office to reach out to a variety of audiences and respond to a variety of issues. If there's one subject that's close to my heart in management, it's communication, and I specialize in all communication techniques (NVC, feedback, complex negotiations...). I'm also fond of innovation, whether managerial or technological, so I'm always up to date with the latest technologies and trends in innovation, and incorporate them into my training courses to help practices evolve. Finally, a third subject that drives me is ecology. As a volunteer facilitator of several workshops and certified B-Leader (C-Corp), Bilan Carbone and Méthode Act, I raise awareness, train and support individuals, groups and companies in their transformation.

Why did you choose to run the NUMA training courses?

Running training courses at NUMA was a natural progression from my experience at Switch Collective. I particularly appreciate the distance learning format, the practicality and impact of the workshops, and the alternation between theory and practice. The structured support and well-designed visual aids also convinced me. I love learning and passing on knowledge, and NUMA enables me to do this on a daily basis.

How do you integrate your professional experience to engage participants?

I've had the opportunity to work in a variety of professions, which enables me to bring a varied perspective to the subjects I cover. I have experience both in the field and in office environments, which includes management responsibilities and immersion in multicultural contexts. This diversity gives me a rich palette of perspectives to share. I draw on my experience to share anecdotes and concrete examples, in order to make concepts lively and captivating, and thus stimulate participants' commitment.

What do you think is the key to successful training?

It's essential that participants have a good time, that they don't see the time passing, that they really enjoy learning and sharing, and of course that they manage to forget about the remote format. It's a real challenge on a daily basis, but if they manage to forget this remote aspect, it's a sign of success!

Training must enable participants to learn through action, experience and exchange. The idea is not only to impart knowledge, but also to encourage independent learning and reflection. Awareness-raising is also a precious moment. When a participant realizes something they were previously unaware of, it can have a significant impact on their personal and professional development. The success of a training course is also measured by participants' ability to apply what they have learned, iterate and improve their skills over time.

Can you share with us a technique you use regularly?

I leave it to the participants to answer for me, but one of the things that comes up most often in the feedback is clarity, humor and dynamism. As for the rest, it's my "secret sauce".
